Malayalam film 'New Year', directed by Viji Thampi, was released in 1989. Suresh Gopi, Jayaram, Urvashi, Sukumaran, Silk Smitha and Babu Antony played the main characters in the film. Santhosh Sivan was the cinematographer of the film. Viji Thampi recently shared an interesting incident that happened while shooting this film.

"One day, Sukuvettan (Sukumaran) came to my room and told me that he heard that Suresh Gopi would be late to come for shooting. I replied that the news was true and that we might have to break the shooting for one or two days. On hearing this, Sukuvettan said that there was no need to break the shooting. He said that he was ready to do the role that was assigned to Suresh Gopi. He even said that he would do the role much better than Suresh. However, I replied to Sukuvettan that although I liked the opinion, he should have come up with this idea at least 10 years before. Sukuvettan's image has changed and hence, that role will come good only if Suresh does it. I further said that I would not do the film if Suresh Gopi refused to do it. On hearing this, Sukuvettan returned disappointed," Viji Thampi said.

He also explained about another incident that took place while shooting a particular scene in the film.

"One day, Sukumaran scolded Suresh Gopi when the rehearsal went on for a long time. Following this, Suresh burst into tears and went to his room. As a result, the shooting almost came to a halt. Following this, actor Kunchan intervened and made Sukumaran apologise to Suresh," he said.
