Sugandhagiri wood cutting: Action against 18 people including DFO

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Action recommended against 18 persons including DFO in connection with controversial tree felling in Sugandhagiri, Wayanad. Action has been recommended against South Wayanad Divisional Forest Officer A Sajna, Kalpatta Range Officer K Neetu, Flying Squad Range Officer K Sajeevan, Section Forest Officers KK Chandran and Veerankutty, seven beat forest officers and six watchers.

Forest Minister AK Saseendran said that the recommendation of Vigilance Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests is based on the report submitted by the special team of Forest Vigilance. The Minister informed that the Additional Chief Secretary of Forests has been instructed to take immediate disciplinary action. The minister said that officials failed to conduct field inspections and take timely action even after two cases were registered.

In Sugandhagiri Chennaikkavala, 126 trees were felled under the guise of a permit issued to cut 20 trees that were threatening the houses of the tribal colony. Ben Teak, wild jack, blackboard tree and African chola trees were cut. Nine people were arrested in the case.

Suspension for Range Officer

Vigilance has recommended suspension of the Kalpatta range officer. Clarification will be sought from DFO and Flying Squad Range Officer. If the explanation is not satisfactory, further action will be taken. Section Officer KK Chandran, Watcher Johnson and Balan, who were previously under suspension, will be added to the accused. The Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests has also recommended the transfer of other beat officers and watchers.
