MVD comes up with gimmick to implement minister's directive, around three lakh driving license applications rejected over 'Covid'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: To comply with minister KB Ganesh Kumar's directive to reduce driving tests, the Motor Vehicle Department has rejected three lakh applications on the grounds of non-existent Covid.

"Due to Covid-19 the driving license appointment for your application has been cancelled. Apply for new appointment. Your fee will remain valid."

This is the SMS message that will those who have been allotted test date for driving license at various RTOs will get.

All applications received so far will be rejected in the name of Covid and new applications will be accepted. Fees paid earlier are retained.

The minister's proposal is to reduce the driving test to 30 per day from May. Currently 60 to 120 tests are conducted. All those who have got learner's license will apply for road test and a date of up to two months is given. These slots have been cancelled now.

CITU's warning ignored

CITU leader Elamaram Kareem's discussion with the Chief Minister led to an agreement to stop the reforms for the time being and hold talks with the driving school owners and employees. However, now those reforms are being taken forward. The All Kerala Driving School Workers Union (CITU) had warned that the minister would be blocked on the road and they will stage a strike if the February 21 circular directing reforms in the driving test is not withdrawn.

Those with learner's license in a fix

If the those with learner's do not pass the test within six months, they have to take the learner's test again. There are only 20 new tests out of 30 tests held each day. 10 is a test for those re-appearing for the test.

Way out

If the test is conducted at more places with more personnel, the new method of test can be given to all the applicants.
