Seven pooris, curry and drinking water for Rs 23, rice-based meals for Rs 20; government's Janata Khana combo for general public

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Railways are providing food at a low price targeting those traveling on general tickets. 150 counters have been started in 100 railway stations in the country to distribute food at low cost. Stalls have been started in 34 railway stations under Southern Railway as well. Small stalls have been started on the platforms near the general coaches of the trains.

The meal known as Janata Khana consisting of seven pooris (175 gm) and bhaji (150 gm) will cost Rs 20 and rice-based meals which are 200 gm curd rice/ lemon rice/ tamarind rice will cost Rs 20. Lunch is priced at Rs 50 which includes a 350 gm assortment of rice varieties. Railways will charge Rs 3 for a sealed glass of drinking water.

Southern Railway PRO M Senthamil Selvan informed that the stalls have been started to provide food at low cost as it is believed to be of great help to passengers in general coaches.

Stalls have also been started in Kerala. Food distribution stalls are functioning at 11 stations in Thiruvananthapuram division and nine stations in Palakkad division. Stalls have also been opened in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli and Salem divisions.
