SC refuses to allow one-year mandatory training for nursing graduates

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court rejected the demand of private hospitals in Kerala to make one year of additional training mandatory for those who complete nursing studies. The bench led by Justice B R Gavai didn’t intervene in the stand of the state government that refused to allow one-year mandatory training.

Kerala Private Hospitals Association filed a petition questioning the government's decision. The argument pointed out the difficulties in directly providing jobs to nursing students and having to pay PF. However, the Supreme Court highlighted the training period of six months included in the four-year nursing course. Therefore, the court observed that the graduates do not need further training and can directly join the job.

It was in 2011 that the government put a stop to the hardship of nursing students to do an additional one-year course to finally land a job. The issue was brought to the notice of the government by the Nursing Students Association complaining about the delay they faced in landing a job.
