BANGKOK: A 59-year-old woman with a blocked nose found that hundreds of maggots were living inside her nostrils. The woman had been experiencing pain in her nose and face for a week but didn't seek treatment as she thought it was due to an allergy. However, after experiencing a nosebleed she went to Nakornping Hospital in Chiang Mai Province, where Dr. Pateemon Thanachaikhan took an X-ray of the woman and found hundreds of worms.

After detecting foreign bodies, a detailed endoscopy was taken to confirm that the worms before being removed. The hospital authorities informed that the pain has subsided and the woman's condition has improved. Experts say that if such worms had spread to the eyes, brain or other organs, it could have resulted in death.

People in northern areas of Thailand, such as Chiang Mai, are more prone to allergies and respiratory ailments. This increases the likelihood of such infections, NDTV reported. Nakornping Hospital has posted pictures and details about the incident on its Facebook page.

A similar incident took place in 2022 as well. Flesh-eating maggots were found inside the ear canal of a 64-year-old ma who came to the hospital after suffering from ear pain. After a detailed examination, the maggots were from the ear.
