Major changes rumoured in AMMA, Edavela Babu to vacate role after 25 years; Mohanlal also likely to step down
Reports indicate that ‘AMMA’, the association of Malayalam actors, will undergo major changes. Edavela Babu, who has held various top positions within the association over the past 25 years and the current general secretary, is likely to step away from any major roles in the association. It is also believed that Mohanlal will follow suit and vacate his secretary role.
AMMA’s next general meeting is said to be held in Gokulam Convention Centre on June 30. There are currently 506 members who have the right to vote. The nomination papers will be accepted from June 3rd. Edavela Babu stepping down from a leadership role has been a big surprise in the run-up to the elections.
Edavela Babu had confirmed this with media recently. He told the media that a change was needed and that he would have to step down in order to let that change happen. He also clarified that he wanted to see new people in the leadership roles. He added that he had expressed a willingness to step down from his role even in the last elections. However, he changed his mind after a talk with Mammootty. "No matter what anyone says, I will be stepping down this time," he said.
AMMA was formed in 1994 and Edavela Babu has been in the role since the third governing body. He started as the joint secretary with Mammootty and Innocent as the President. After Mohanlal and Mammootty became general secretary, Edavela Babu became the secretary. He finally became general secretary in 2018.
The last elections were held in 2021 with Mohanlal and Edavela Babu winning the elections unanimously. However, there was a contest for the roles of vice president and for the role of executive committee member. Maniyanpillai Raju and Shweta Menon were elected as the vice presidents of the association. For the role of executive committee member, Lal and Vijay Babu won convincingly. The 3 members from the official panel- Nivin Pauly, Honey Rose and Nasser Latif- surprisingly lost in the elections. Asha Sarath who had contested for the role of vice president also lost.
Usually in AMMA, the official panel is usually approved by the members of AMMA. Jayasurya and Siddique unanimously became joint secretary and treasurer respectively.
