Rain to continue in state; orange alert in seven districts, fishermen warned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The central meteorological department has issued orange alert in seven districts of the state due to continuous heavy rains. Orange alert has been declared in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki. Yellow alert has also been announced in Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode.


Due to the influence of monsoon winds, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in the state today. A yellow alert warning has also been announced in 11 districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode tomorrow. The new information is in the warning announced by the central meteorological department this afternoon.


Rains will intensify in South and Central Kerala. Heavy rain is likely at isolated places till June 1. More rain is likely in the coastal and inland areas. Expect strong winds and thunderstorms. There is a strict directive that fishermen should not venture in the sea on Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts due to the possibility of strong winds and high waves.
The National Center for Oceanography and Research had earlier informed that there is a possibility of 3.0 to 3.3 meter high waves and storm surge along the Kerala coast from 11.30 am to 11.30 pm today with a speed of 55 cm to 70 cm per second.


Meantime, houses in Alappuzha and Kayamkulam incurred damages in the strong winds and rain. The roof of Mani's house in Alappuzha Thalavadi Pattamana was blown away by the wind. The roof fell 200 meters away. Mani, who is visually impaired, ran out of the house but fell and injured his chest and hand.
