CHERUTHONI: A man ran away after pouring petrol on the bodies of his mother-in-law and brother-in-law's two-and-a-half-year-old son, and setting them on fire. Kochumalayil Annakutty (62) and son Lins's daughter Liyah (two-and-a-half), who live in Painav's 56 Colony, suffered injuries in the fire. They were set ablaze by Kanjikuzhi Nirapil Santhosh (45), husband of Annakutty's daughter Princy.

After the incident, Santhosh left his phone at his brother Sugathan's house and went into hiding. Annakutty and Liyah who suffered burns were given first aid at Idukki Medical College and taken to Kottayam Medical College. The incident happened at 3.30 pm on Wednesday. Santhosh asked Annakutty to call back his wife Princy, who is working as a nurse in Italy, and demanded to pay him his wife's salary. At this time, Annakutty, who was inside the house holding her granddaughter Liyah, objected to this. Santhosh immediately entered the house, poured petrol on Annakutty's body and set her on fire. Annakutty suffered 40 percent burns on her face and chest. The child has 20 percent burns.

When Annakutty's relatives came to know about it, they thrashed Hotel Ambadi, run by Santhosh's brother Sugathan in Cheruthoni at around 5 pm.
