SI commits suicide in Police Academy

THRISSUR: SI was found to have committed suicide in Ramavarmapuram Police Academy. Trainer SI Jimmy George died. He was 36 years old. The body was found in the old hospital block. He is a native of Madayikonam, Thrissur. The reason for the suicide is not clear.

Recently, incidents of police officers committing suicide in the state are becoming a sequel. There were reports that many of them committed suicide due to mental stress.

In the last five years, more than 50 police officers have committed suicide in the state. Many have tried to commit suicide. Senior CPO Jobi Das of Kalamassery AR Camp and CPO Shafi of Mala took their own lives as they could not tolerate being tortured and withheld benefits by their superiors.

Counseling and yoga have been tried in the past to make the policemen mentally stronger after the such incidents . A committee consisting of psychologists was also formed to solve the mental and family problems of the officers. DGP had ordered that mentally disturbed persons be sent for counseling and that period be considered as duty. Yet such incidents keep repeating.

Fleeing of woman SHO in Wayanad due to excessive workload while on duty was also discussed earlier. The officer, who fled due to the abuse of the Assistant Commissioner, was later found in Coimbatore.
