Major fire in building occupied by Malayalees in Kuwait kills 35, many injured

KUWAIT CITY: The death toll in the fire that broke out in a building in the southern Kuwait City of Mangaf rose to 35. Unconfirmed reports said two Malayalees were among the dead. Natives of Tamil Nadu and North India are also reported to have died. Many people sustained serious injuries.


News agencies reported that the fire broke out in the flat occupied by the employees of a company owned by a Malayali. The building is occupied by the employees of the NBTC company in Mangaf Block 4. The building is owned by Malayali businessman K G Abraham. The fire broke out at around 4 am today. Initial reports said the fire spread from the kitchen of the labor camp.


The injured are being treated at Adan, Jabar and Mubarak hospitals. The condition of some of these are stated to be serious. Many people are undergoing treatment in nearby hospitals. There were people who jumped from the top floor after seeing fire on the ground floor. Reports said many are trapped inside the building.
