Widespread rain alert in Kerala; Kallakkadal threat looms large in coastal areas

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian meteorological department on Sunday predicted heavy rainfall with thunder in most of the state during the next few hours. Except for Thiruvananthapuram, all other districts have been warned by IMD following the rain concern. IMD has also banned fishing in the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts.

Strong winds of 35 to 45 kmph are likely over Kerala - Karnataka - Lakshadweep coasts. In the Lakshadweep region, adjoining Maldives region, South Bay of Bengal, Central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, there is a possibility of strong winds and bad weather.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Center has informed the possibility of Kallakkadal phenomenon on Kerala and Tamil Nadu coast till 11:30 pm on June 24th. The fisherman community are thus warned to practice caution. Apart from this, there is also a threat of whirlwinds on the Kerala coast.

The National Center for Oceanographic Studies (INCOIS) has warned of the possibility of high waves of 2.8 to 3.1 meters along the coasts of Kasaragod and Kannur districts from 05:30 am to 11:30 pm on the 24th.
