'Keralam' story begins! Kerala assembly passes resolution to change state's name

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Assembly passed a resolution asking the Central Government to change the state name to 'Keralam' in the Constitution. The resolution presented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was unanimously passed on Monday.

The name of the state in Malayalam is 'Keralam' but the First Schedule of the Constitution records it as 'Kerala'. The resolution demands immediate action to amend the state name to 'Keralam'.

On the subject, the Chief Minister had already presented a resolution in the House on August 9, 2023. The Center was asked to take steps to change the name of the state from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam' in Schedules One and Eight of the Constitution. However, then the Union Home Ministry said there was only a need to amend the first schedule of the constitution to change the state name. It was in this context that the legislative assembly passed yet another resolution on the subject on Monday.
