Five including Malayali students under suspension, union for strike

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad University suspended five students including a Malayali. It is alleged that the university has taken revengeful action against the students. Minority-Dalit students who protested in front of the vice chancellor's residence were suspended.

The students were protesting against the delay in giving funds to the student union in the university and not allowing the annual celebration program 'Sukoon' to be held. The police have also registered a case against the students for allegedly barging to the vice chancellor’s residence and trying to assault him. Action has been taken against Malayalee Union General Secretary Kripa Maria George, Union President Ateeq Ahmed, Mohit, Sohail Ahmed and Asika V M.

Union general secretary Kripa Maria George responded to the media saying that the administration is harming them by retaliating just like Rohit Vemula, who was a Dalit research student of the University of Hyderabad, was pushed to commit suicide. The administration has asked the students facing action to stay away from classes and vacate the hostel for six months from July 1. In case of such action, the student's fellowship will be cancelled.

The two students facing action are JRF scholars. One is a post-doctoral fellow. Two others are doing PhD course. Those who get fellowships will be canceled and those doing PhD coursework will have to drop out, the students said. The students said that they will strike until the action is withdrawn.
