NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi heaped praises on the makers of ‘Karthumbi Umbrellas’ at Attappadi in Palakkad. He mentioned about the unit in his monthly radio broadcast ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

‘Monsoon is arriving in different parts of the country. All of us must have started searching for an umbrella at home during the rainy season. Modi in today's Mann Ki Baat said that he wants to tell us about a special kind of umbrellas. These umbrellas are made in Kerala. Umbrellas are important in the culture of Kerala. Umbrellas are an integral part of the traditions and customs of Kerala. The umbrella I am talking about is Karthumbi umbrella. These umbrellas are made at Attappadi in Kerala.

These colourful umbrellas are made by out tribal sisters of Kerala. Today the demand for umbrellas is increasing across the country. These umbrellas are also sold online. The umbrellas are made under the supervision of ‘Vattalakki Cooperative Agricultural Society. This society is driven by our women power. Under the leadership of women, the tribal community of Attappadi has created an excellent example of initiative.

This society has also started a bamboo handicraft unit. They are all set to open a retail outlet and a traditional snack bar. Their aim is not only to sell umbrellas and other products. Along with that they also introduce their tradition and culture to the world. Today the Karthumpi Umbrellas are completing their journey from a small village in Kerala to multinational companies. Is there a better example of Vocal for Local than this? - asked Modi.
