NEW DELHI: The Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act, which were remnants of the British rule, have been replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, the Bharatiya Civil Protection Code and the Indian Evidence Act. This is part of the introduction of a modern criminal justice system in the country. These were passed by the second Modi government.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had tabled the amended Bills in the Lok Sabha on 12 December 2023 after considering the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee. The central government had informed that the three new criminal laws were made taking into consideration the social realities and crimes of the changing times. The Centre had also stated that legislation were made on the basis of the ideas raised by the Constitution. Amit Shah responded that the body and soul of the laws are completely Indian.
