Defamation case; Delhi Saket court sentences Medha Patkar to five months imprisonment

NEW DELHI: Prominent environmental activist Medha Patkar has been sentenced to imprisonment by the Delhi Saket Court in a defamation case. The verdict is in a defamation case filed by the current Lt. Governor Naveen Saxena in 2001. He was sentenced to five months imprisonment and a fine of 10 lakhs. The sentencing process has been suspended till the first of next month for Medha Patkar to approach the Supreme Court.

The court also ordered Medha Patkar to pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh to Saxena. The sentence was passed by Metropolitan Magistrate Raghav Sharma. The court also pointed out that one to two years of imprisonment was not awarded to Medha Patkar considering her age and health. Saxena had filed a defamation case against Medha Patkar for allegedly making defamatory allegations on television channels and issuing press statements.
