ALAPPUZHA: Boat race dates are approaching, giving necessary thrills to people mostly in Alappuzha. These events generate mirth and enthusiasm in these people, unlike any other event.

If the oar is flawless, the Chundan (snake boats) will thrive. K.R. Binu, owner of Vembanad Rudder Works in Kottayam Panachikadu is busy polishing oars. Binu has been working in this field for 35 years and his famous paddles have even reached the United Kingdom. Over 1500 paddles will be produced for various clubs during the season.

A total of 101 to 110 paddles are needed for one single snake boat. It takes four hours to prepare an oar. Kochumon, PC Rajesh, Rajesh and Rajan are assistants at work. Binu's teacher is Isaac, who made oars in Panachikadu.

Mainly two types are made namely mongoose paddle and gun paddle. In the Aranmula boat race, a narrow humped paddle will be used for rowing. Binu also provides paddles for fishermen in the backwaters and to Chellanam Harbour.

Formerly, the maximum width of the bottom part of the paddle that hits water was five and a half inches. But today paddlers prefer oars up to seven and a half inches wide. The greater the width, the greater the speed of the boat.

The oars are made from bamboo sticks, 80-foot-long timber with good yield. Once cut to size, chiselled, thinned, sanded, and sandpapered, the paddle will be fit for use. The basic design is done by hand.
