'Torn jeans and T-shirts not allowed inside campus'; college authorities issue new guidelines to students

MUMBAI: After banning hijab, a college in Mumbai has issued fresh guidelines to students banning torn jeans and t-shirts inside the campus. It was the governing body of NG Acharya and DK Marathi College under Chembur Trombay Education Society that issued the new guidelines to the students.

The governing body issued the notice on June 27. According to reports, a notice has been pasted outside the college gate asking students not to wear torn jeans, T-shirts, “revealing” dresses and jerseys, or a dress that reveals religion or shows “cultural disparity” inside the campus.

Male students can wear a half or full shirt and trousers. Girls can wear any Indian or Western outfit, it said.

“Students shall not wear any dress which reveals religion or shows cultural disparity. Nakab, hijab, burka, stole, cap, etc shall be removed by going to the common rooms on the ground floor and then only (students) can move throughout the college campus,” the notice said.

The college has been in the news for imposing a ban on hijab. The authorities said that the decision to ban hijab, nakab and burqa was only a disciplinary measure of the uniform dress code and not against the Muslim community.
