KOZHIKODE: To avoid passengers cramming into trains and to avoid unreserved passengers getting into reserved coaches, the Railways has come up with a surgical strike in north Kerala. The Railways have introduced a special train thereby temporarily resolving the hellish circumstances in train travel during the evening rush hours in Shornur - Kannur - Shornur Special Train.

Passengers in northern Kerala have demaned regular services of the special train that runs four days a week. The train running special service has a seating capacity of 948 passengers in 12 general compartments. Commuters say that once the service allowed for a month is made permanent, the long-standing travel crisis will end.

The train is a hit among the passengers, not only that, the Netravati Express and Kannur Express trains that reach Kozhikode in the evening are not crowded. Meanwhile, since it runs as an express train, the minimum fare is Rs 30. Passengers want this to be reduced to Rs.10. The train departs from Shornur at 03.40 pm and reaches Kozhikode at 05.30 pm.

Passengers say that if the train service is made regular, the Railways should also consider extending it to Kasaragod in the future and considering the number of passengers, the service will be profitable. Passenger organizations also demand that the politicians to intervene to change the special service to a regular service.
