Alarming surge in suicide rate in Kerala, 36,213 killed self in last five years

THRISSUR: In five years, 36,213 people took their lives within the limits of 364 police stations in Kerala. RTI records show that among these are 21,476 men, 5,585 women and 600 children. At the same time, out of total 485 police stations, 81 police stations have not replied.

According to psychiatrists, there is an increasing tendency for mass suicide in family and parents committing suicide after killing their children. Many people are affected by family problems. Sixty percent of women who commit suicide are housewives. Financial problems, marital discord, adultery etc. are also causes. The people killing themselves ranges from doctors and IT professionals to businessmen and salaried workers.

Meanwhile, KPCC secretary and public activist Adv Shaji Kodankandath appealed against the stations which replied that the information should be collected in person. A complaint was also lodged with the Chief Minister demanding disciplinary action against the police officers who deliberately did not respond to the RTI request.

Suicides can be prevented
