Congress resurgence in by-poll elections; wrests Dehra for first time in history

NEW DELHI: In a major boost for the opposition camp, the INDIA front is about to script a massive election victory in the recently held by-polls across seven states in India. While the counting of votes is in progress, the INDIA alliance has secured victory in three seats including Punjab and the neighbouring state of Himachal Pradesh. They are also leading in seven other states.

Meanwhile, NDA is leading in two seats including Bihar. Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, has secured the first victory for Congress from Dehra. TMC and DMK are leading in nine seats. BJP is leading in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur while JD(U) is leading in Bihar's Rupauli.

Kamlesh on her election debut emerged as the giant killer by wresting Dehra from BJP for the first time since 2010.

Congress candidates are leading in one seat in Madhya Pradesh while Congress candidates are leading in both seats in Uttarakhand. DMK candidate Anniyur Siva secured victory in Tamil Nadu's Vikravandi constituency with a huge majority.

Aam Aadmi Party candidate Mohinder Bhagat won in Jalandhar West in Punjab with a majority of more than 37 thousand votes. Sheetal Angurlal, who joined the BJP as an MLA, suffered a heavy defeat. The TMC candidates are leading by a huge margin in all the four by-election seats in West Bengal.
