History sheeter involved in Armstrong murder case killed in police encounter in TN

CHENNAI: Second encounter killing in Tamil Nadu in a week. The police killed history sheeter Thiruvengadam, the accused in the murder of BSP leader K Armstrong. The police said that when he was taken to a spot to recover the weapons used to kill Armstrong, he tried to attack the cops and in return they had to open fire at him.


The encounter happened at Madhavaram in Chennai. Though Thiruvengadam was taken to the government Stanley Hospital, his life could not be saved. The doctors examined and declared him brought dead.


Goonda leader Durai was killed in an encounter earlier in Tiruchirappalli's Pudukkottai. The police reached the spot after receiving information that the goonda team he belonged to was hiding in the forest. He was killed in the ensuing encounter. The police said that when he shot the inspector, they shot him to save his life. The police also released the picture of the officer injured in Durai's attack.


Durai was a notorious criminal who was a nightmare for the people and the police. He was accused in 69 cases including five murders. Police say that he and his gang members walked with weapons including guns.


Several recent encounter killings have also taken place in northern states including Uttar Pradesh. In many of these, the dead included hardened criminals accused in gang-rape cases. However, after allegations were raised from some quarters that the encounter was not a murder but a murder, an investigation has been announced.
