'Heaviest rainfall of this season'; IMD issues red alert in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On Saturday, Kerala woke up to heavy rains which continued incessantly for many hours. But on Sunday, the sky looked clear, giving signs of fine weather. Wait before you take these signs into belief as IMD on Sunday warned about heavy rains in the state for the coming days. They also warned the predicted rains to be the most extreme in the ongoing monsoon season.

Light rain is also possible at isolated places in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Kasaragod districts. A red alert has been issued in Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Monday. Heavy rain is likely in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Wayanad districts on Monday. Kannur and Kasaragod are on orange alert today.

North-westerly winds are getting stronger along the Kerala coast. As a result of this, there is a possibility of widespread thunder/lightning/windy rains at isolated places in the state for the next five days, the Indian Meteorological Department has informed.

The National Oceanographic Research Center has requested special vigilance along the coasts of Kannur and Kasaragod districts. There is a possibility of high waves and rough seas at these places. There is a possibility of 2.8 to 3.3 meter high waves and sea storms on the coasts of Kannur and Kasaragod districts tomorrow from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm.
