Centre to implement this project instead of K-Rail to run trains at 160 kmph speed in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is almost certain that the K-Rail project, proposed by the state government for high-speed rail travel in Kerala, will not become a reality. Although the state government intended to implement the project in collaboration with the Indian Railways, the Railways clarified that it is not interested in the project. In the meantime, the central government proposed a third railway line in the state as an alternative to K-Rail. According to reports, the feasibility study for the third rail line in Kerala is in its final stages.
Three routes are being considered for the third rail lane. The aerial survey of Shoranur-Eranakulam in Thiruvananthapuram division, Shoranur-Mangaluru and Shoranur-Coimbatore in Palakkad division has almost been completed. Authorities have also begun soil testing of these routes. Once the survey process is completed, a detailed report will be submitted to the Railway Board. The Railway Board will make the final decision after considering whether it is economically beneficial to lay railway lines on these routes.
Only Vande Bharat trains make most of their journey through Kerala at speeds of over 100 kmph. The maximum speed attained by other trains in the state is 80 kmph. In certain areas, trains are not allowed to move faster than 50 kmph. According to the Railways, a third rail line should be constructed to allow trains to travel at 160 kmph. The introduction of the new rail line will help speed up the existing train traffic and start new services.
