THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called an emergency meeting to discuss on the steps to be taken on the various problems due to the accumulation of garbage in Amayizhanjan canal that passes underneath the Thampanoor railway station. The meeting will be held online on July 18th at 11:30 am.

Ministers of Local Self-Government, Public Works, Labour, Food, Sports-Railway, Health and Water Resources, concerned MLAs and Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram will attend the meet. Senior officials including the chief secretary and railway divisional manager will attend the meet.

Accumulation of garbage in this area is blocking the flow of water and causing waterlogging in and around Thampanoor. The meeting is in a situation where germs multiply and poses serious health problems.

HC intervenes
The Kerala High Court directed the railways, state government and the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation to immediately remove the garbage from the Amayizhanjan Canal. A division bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas and Justice P Gopinath asked not to blame each other. The court asked the district collector, railways and the corporation to submit a report on how the garbage can be removed. The corporation has been included as a party in the plea. Following the death of Joy, the court voluntarily considered the issue.

Three judges of the high court have been entrusted as amicus curiae to submit a report on garbage issue. A team led by advocate T V Vinu will visit the place before July 19. Their expense of Rs 1.5 lakh should be borne jointly by the railway, government and the corporation. Should communicate with the officials of Operation Anantha, launched to find a permanent solution to waterlogging in the capital city.
