CM directs to take strict action against people using banned plastic carry bags and products

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan decided to take strict action against people using banned plastic carry bags and products.


The decision was taken at the meeting convened in connection with the garbage issue in Amayizhanchan Canal. The provisions of the Disaster Management Act will be used to supervise and facilitate the operations to tackle the garbage issue in the city. Under the supervision of the district collector, the sub-collector will be assigned as a special officer to coordinate the activities. The coordination of three departments like major irrigation, corporation and railways will be ensured.


Strict action will be taken to discourage banned plastic products. Strict action will be taken including canceling the registration of vehicles dumping waste on public roads and water bodies.


The chief minister congratulated people who bravely participated in the rescue mission at Amayizhanchan Canal, especially the scuba team.


The chief minister said that garbage disposal is important to prevent contagious diseases. The railways should ensure scientific waste management every day. The Indian Railways has been directed to clean the 130-metre-long tunnel that runs through the Thampanoor railway station. The railway engineering department should conduct a weekly inspection to ensure that the waste collected from the trains is treated scientifically. The irrigation department will carry out maintenance of the fencing on both sides of the canal. The work on the new fencing to be installed at 2000 meters will start soon. The corporation will set up two trash booms near the bridge in the middle of Rajaji Nagar and at the end of the Nagar. The work on the identified site for Solid Waste Project in Rajajinagar area will start soon.


Metal meshes will be installed by major irrigation department. Fire & Rescue will provide training and necessary safety arrangements to those engaged in waste management operations. 40 AI cameras will be installed. These will be connected to the police control room. Strict action will be taken against the litterers.


Existing Thumburmuzhi units at Rajaji Nagar will be operationalized and surplus waste will be handed over to authorized agencies and Mini MCF/Container MCF will be set up to collect inorganic waste.


KSRTC has been instructed to set up an Effluent Treatment Plant and Integrated Waste Management System to avoid discharge of waste water and other solid wastes from the service station at KSRTC Thampanoor Bus Depot to Amayizhanchan Canal.
