'Malayalam cinema used to be known as sex movies': Bollywood director talks about Mollywood
MUMBAI: Film director Ram Gopal Varma said that Malayalam cinema was once known as sex films. He was talking to the media called Galatta Plus. "Things have changed today. Malayalam cinema is producing world-class works and that is why it is recognized globally," he said.
"When I was studying engineering in Vijayawada, we never watched Malayalam films because they had more sex content than any other language films," says Ram Gopal Varma. "What I said doesn't mean that there were no good films in Malayalam back then, maybe distributors were mostly delivering such films. Today, the situation has completely changed. Good films and good actors are coming out of Malayalam," he added. He also expressed his opinion about Indian cinema. "The film industry is changing rapidly. It is impossible to predict what will happen in the next six months. It is the unexpected succession of hit films that have changed the course of the industry." He also praised some of the films released in Malayalam this year by name. "Films like Premalu, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil, Ullozhukku and Bhramayugam are very well made. Commercial films and drama-type films are coming from Malayalam. There is no doubt that Malayalam cinema is shining this year," said Ram Gopal Varma.
