THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state government will try to implement the recommendations in the report submitted by the Justice Hema Committee on the issues faced by women in the film industry. Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said that the government has explored the possibility of introducing a general framework to facilitate the implementation of the committee's recommendations. He also dismissed rumours which claimed that the government deliberately tried to delay the release of the report.

"The creation of a panel to examine the challenges faced by women in the film industry is a landmark move, making it a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country," the Chief Minister stated.

"The Hema Committee's report brought to light a slew of grave concerns plaguing the film industry. The government has diligently worked towards implementing the committee's suggestions," the CM said.

"The government stands with those who are facing exploitation. We will hold conclaves and discussions to find solutions to the problems. The report contains matters that affect the privacy of many individuals. The Hema Committee had requested that the report should not be made public. We have ensured that the ICC is formed in the film industry with utmost urgency. There is a recommendation to form a tribunal to prevent exploitation in the film and television industries. This is a recommendation that can lead to heavy financial liabilities. The tribunal will be given due consideration. The government does not hold the entire film industry in disrepute. We must refrain from tarnishing the reputation of the entire film industry. It's up to the people from the film industry to take the initiative in creating decent job opportunities," he said.

"Other serious recommendations in the report include preventing alcohol and drug abuse, and stopping sexual harassment. Law enforcement agencies can effectively intervene in such matters, and they are already doing so. The government alone cannot make decisions on matters such as installing e-toilets and secure dressing rooms at shooting locations, and ensuring the safety of women who travel and stay for film-related work. All these will be discussed at the conclave where issues related to the film industry will be addressed," the CM added.
