Sitaram Yechury’s remains donated to AIIMS for teaching and research; public viewing on 14th

NEW DELHI: The mortal remains of late CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury will be handed over to AIIMS Medical College in Delhi for studies. According to CPM sources, the body will be kept for public viewing at AKG Bhavan in Delhi on the 14th. It is learnt that the body will be handed over to AIIMS after this. The body will be kept in the mortuary of AIIMS today.

Yechury's remains will be taken to his home in Vasant Kunj tomorrow evening and a public viewing will be held from 9 am to noon the next day. The body will be taken to AIIMS in the afternoon. Leaders including Prakash Karat have reached the central committee office after hearing the news of Yechury's death. The party flag in the office was lowered.

Yechury breathed his last at around 4 pm today while undergoing treatment for a lung infection at AIIMS in Delhi. He was admitted to AIIMS on May 19 after he complained of uneasiness. He had been on ventilator support for four days. Yechury was being monitored by a team of expert doctors. The party had issued a press release soon after the disease became serious.

Yechury was elected to the CPM Central Committee in 1984 and has been a member of the CPM politburo since 1992. He was also the CPM's chief of international affairs and the editor of the party's mouthpiece People's Democracy. Yechury was seen as someone who is interested in alliances that keep the right wing out of power.
