SP to conduct probe against ADGP

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Vigilance team led by an SP will conduct an investigation over allegations of unauthorized wealth accumulation, gold smuggling, and bribery. There's an ongoing debate about the extent to which an SP can investigate against senior ADGP overseeing law and order.

SP KL Johnkutty is the head of the Special Investigation Unit, which comprises DySP Shibu Pappachan, and Inspectors KV Abhilash and Kiran. Vigilance Director Yogesh Gupta will oversee the investigation. The probe will begin on Monday. The probe must conclude within six months. A case will be filed based on the report, but it requires government approval.

An investigation is also underway against former Malappuram SP Sujith Das and the Malappuram DANSAF team under the SP's control. The probe focuses on matters such as the illegal felling of trees within the compound of the SP office and the seizure of smuggled gold.

KL Johnkutty, who was the Kottayam Vigilance SP, was recently transferred to the special unit in Thiruvananthapuram. He will take charge on Monday.

Probe without touching Sasi

• The government ordered a Vigilance probe into the allegations raised by PV Anvar against ADGP MR Ajith Kumar, following a recommendation by the DGP
• Anvar had levelled allegations against the Chief Minister's Political Secretary, P Sasi as well. However, Sasi does not come under the scope of investigation.
