Thiruvananthapuram overtakes Kochi; capital city recorded a huge leap to come first in 2024
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram overtook Ernakulam to become the district with the highest number of vehicle registrations in the state in the year 2024. According to data released by the Motor Vehicles Department, 97,501 vehicles were registered across eight RTOs in the capital district, while Ernakulam recorded 97,052 registrations across its nine RTOs. Thiruvananthapuram registered 449 more vehicles than Ernakulam.
The Thiruvananthapuram RTO (KL-01) came first in the state with 33,357 vehicle registrations. Ernakulam RTO (KL-07) secured second place with 24,798 registrations. Nedumangad RTO (KL-21) in Thiruvananthapuram district came third, registering 12,226 vehicles. Other RTOs in the Thiruvananthapuram district reported the following numbers: Kazhakkoottam (10,736), Attingal (9,764), Neyyattinkara (8,414), Kattakada (8,938), Parassala (8,046), and Varkala (5,980).
In Ernakulam district, the number of vehicles registered in various RTOs were as follows: Aluva (11,042), Thrippunithura (10,986), North Paravur (10,598), Muvattupuzha (9,843), Perumbavoor (9,776), Mattancherry (9,098), Angamaly (6,117), and Kothamangalam (4,824).
However, the increasing number of vehicles in the capital city is contributing significantly to traffic congestion. During peak hours, long vehicle queues are observed not only at major junctions but also on inner roads.
Transport Commissioner CH Nagaraju emphasized the growing importance of encouraging people to use public transport in the capital city. The data also underscores the increasing need for the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had written to the Central Government last month seeking approval for the Metro Rail Project in Thiruvananthapuram.
