KOCHI: Plastic bottles are likely to get banned in hill stations across the state. The High Court has directed the government to propose measures to prohibit the use of plastic water bottles in the hill stations. A Division Bench comprising Justices Bechu Kurian Thomas and P. Gopinath informed that a court order will follow. The court will consider the matter again on Tuesday.

"The preferred method is to provide water in large containers and serve it in glasses. This would help avoid the accumulation of small plastic water bottles, especially during events like weddings. The Madras High Court's ruling prohibiting plastic bottles on the hill stations in Tamil Nadu serves as a model. Similar restrictions are needed in Kerala as well. The ban can be extended to other areas as well," the court said.

Local Self-Government Department Secretary TV Anupama informed the court that the state has contacted the Kodaikanal District Collector to seek details regarding prohibiting plastic bottles in hill stations. She also said that the state is considering banning mineral water bottles below a certain capacity, specifically those under 500 ml. She said that an audit of auditoriums hosting receptions and other functions will be completed this month. The government will ensure that these venues implement proper waste management systems.

The court also suggested that it would be appropriate to collect a security deposit from catering establishments and banquet halls as a precautionary measure. Roadside eateries continue to dispose of waste in the sewage canals, and strict conditions should be considered before granting them licenses. The court instructed that waste should be collected in containers and properly processed. The division bench was considering a suo-motu petition related to waste disposal.
