Lost sheen of employment exchange system

Once upon a time, the state's employment exchanges were the only solace for unemployed educated youths. It was common for unemployed youths to register their names into the employment exchange immediately after passing any exams. This figure in the employment exchange was used in a database by politicians to highlight the horror of unemployment in the country. Those are bygone days.

In contemporary times, youngsters are not ready to pass their time registering with employment exchanges, since they are aware of the stagnant state and the outcome awaiting them. Today, many of those pursuing technical courses have more job opportunities than through the employment exchange. Only people with no special qualifications are registering with employment exchange these days, that too with little hope of landing a job.

Figures show that more than 30 lakh people have registered their names in various exchanges and are still waiting for employment. Between 2021 and 2024, only 47,390 people have been appointed through the exchange. However, if we compare it with the appointments made every year through PSC, it can be understood that only ten per cent of them are made through exchange.

The maximum period is six months, but some people get longer extensions at work. Meanwhile, backdoor appointments still thrive with impunity, ruining the chances of many hopefuls. The government has proposed that all temporary appointments be made through the Employment Exchange. Often the people of the ruling front, the relatives and patrons of high-ranking officials will get priority consideration for the job.

People now view the employment exchange as a rugged system gone beyond repair. Many youngsters have now made up their minds to not register with the exchange anymore.

In addition to government employment exchanges, there are many organizations in the private sector to help job seekers. Interestingly, things are fast-paced in such firms. Getting a job with a decent monthly pay is no herculean task these days. The entry of small enterprises has greatly increased the employment potential. Similarly, the entry of large commercial centres provides good employment opportunities. Heartbroken are those who are still looking for white-collar jobs in government offices.

The current job market in the country makes employment exchanges less relevant. It is just a matter of time before the system becomes redundant.
