Accident at Kottayam MCH, Bindu to be laid to rest today; family reiterate lapses in rescue operations

KOTTAYAM: Bindu, who died in the building collapse at Kottayam Medical College, will be cremated Friday morning at 11 am. Her body will be taken to her house in Thalayolaparambu soon. A team led by the district collector will begin an investigation into the accident today.

Bindu's family is reiterating that there has been a lapse in the rescue operations. Relatives said Bindu could have been saved if rescue operations had been carried out immediately after the accident. The family also requested the government to provide compensation.

Meantime, the Congress has demanded financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh to the family and a government job for her daughter. The opposition has decided to intensify the protest demanding the resignation of Health Minister Veena George.

The closed washroom which was on the second floor of the 68-year-old building collapsed. The disaster occurred at 10.50 am yesterday. The dead is D Bindu (52), a garment shop employee and wife of Vishruthan of Thalayolaparambu.

The accident happened when Bindu, who was in the hospital as part of her daughter Navami’s (20), treatment in the neurotrauma care, went for a shower. Navami is a nursing student at Andhra Apollo Hospital.

In the accident, Aleena Vincent (11), granddaughter of Thresiyamma of Wayanad admitted in the tenth ward after surgery, Jinu Saji (38), and Amal Pradeep (20), an employee of the casualty sustained injuries. The search started at 12.50 pm after Navami informed that her mother was missing. Bindu was found at 1 pm and admitted to the emergency department, but her life could not be saved.

Surgeries to be suspended In the wake of the accident, surgeries at Kottayam Medical College will be suspended today. The surgeries in the operation theatres in the block where the accident occurred will be suspended. There are eight operation theatres in this block. Authorities said the patients will be informed the new date for the surgery.
