No ISL this year: Tournament postponed indefinitely

NEW DELHI: The Indian Super League (ISL) is unlikely to be held in the 2025–26 season, according to reports. Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the organizing body of the league, has reportedly notified the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and participating ISL clubs about the potential cancellation. FSDL functions under the Reliance Group.

The main reason for the possible cancellation is a dispute over broadcasting rights. When AIFF released the official football calendar for the year, the ISL was not included, adding weight to the uncertainty. The ISL, which started in 2014, became India’s top-tier football league in 2019, replacing the I-League. The cancellation of an entire season comes at a time when India is aiming to grow its presence in football.

Another major issue is the pending renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between FSDL and AIFF, which expires in December. FSDL has clearly stated that the league cannot proceed unless the agreement is renewed. So far, no steps have been taken to start the renewal process. As per the current deal, FSDL pays Rs 50 crore to AIFF each year.
