WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has been embroiled in a scandal over the revelation that he sent an erotic letter to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who sexually abused several underage girls. Jeffrey, who was charged with sex trafficking, hanged himself in prison in August 2019.

The birthday message is inscribed within a sketch of a naked woman, believed to have been drawn with a marker pen. The text and its profane references are in the style of a fictional conversation between Trump and Epstein, written in third person.

Trump and Epstein are believed to have had a 15-year friendship dating back to the 1980s. The two were often seen together at parties and other events. Trump says he ended his friendship with Epstein in 2004 after a real estate dispute.

Trump sues for $10 billion in defamation

The incident was revealed by the American media outlet The Wall Street Journal, which claimed that Trump sent Epstein a birthday message in 2003. The letter is said to have Trump's name and signature. Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal's parent company Dow Jones and owner Rupert Murdoch, seeking $10 billion in damages. Trump claims that the letter is not his and is a fake. Democratic members have come out against Trump.
