Woman demands apartment, 12 crores and luxury car from ex-husband; Supreme Court asks, 'Why don’t you work also?'
NEW DELHI: A woman has demanded a luxury car and an apartment worth crores from her husband as maintenance. The Supreme Court has strongly criticised the woman who demanded Rs 12 crore, a high-end BMW car and a flat in Mumbai. The court also said that educated women should earn their own living without depending on their husbands. Chief Justice BR Gavai's remarks were made while hearing the alimony demand of a wife who ended her 18-month marriage.
"You are so educated. You shouldn’t have to ask and should earn for yourself. You had a marriage for just 18 months, and now you also want a BMW? 18 months marriage and you want one crore for each month?!” Justice B.R. Gavai asked. However, the woman told the court that her husband is very rich and that he is accusing her of suffering from schizophrenia.
Advocate Madhavi Dhiwan, appearing for her husband, pointed out that the alimony demanded by the woman was too high. The court directed the woman to either accept the flat or 'take the 4 crores and find a good job.' Later, the court also verbally told the woman to look for a job in IT companies. "You’ve done your MBA. You’re in demand… Bengaluru, Hyderabad… Why don’t you work also?” CJI Gavai asked.
