Cinema Conclave: Policy document calls for end to 'casting couch' in Malayalam cinema, those found guilty should be expelled
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The policy document released at the Cinema Conclave has called for an end to the exploitation of newcomers in Malayalam cinema, commonly referred to as the “casting couch.” It urged film organisations to implement strict policies to prevent sexual exploitation and create a confidential mechanism for reporting casting couch complaints.
Those found guilty should be expelled and blacklisted. Discrimination, sexual harassment, and abuse of power on film sets must be strictly prohibited. Challenges faced by women and gender minorities on sets should be addressed. A standardised protocol for auditions should be implemented, and a uniform code of conduct should be introduced across the film industry. Casting directors must be present during auditions and studio sessions.
The law to prevent sexual harassment should be strictly enforced, and production companies unwilling to comply must face penalties. Women film professionals have demanded the proper implementation of sexual harassment prevention laws. There have also been calls for action against those filing false complaints. A task force should be formed to curb cyber and online attacks, and an anti-piracy cell should be set up under the cyber police.
Work hours and wages should be fixed
