Election in AMMA begins amid controversies; slim chances for Mammootty to cast vote
KOCHI: The election to the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has started amidst controversies. The election, which began at 10 am today, will be held at the Kochi Marriott Hotel until 1 pm. The results are likely to be announced at 4 pm. 507 members of the organization, including 233 women, have the right to vote. As Mammootty is in Chennai, he is unlikely to cast his vote. All top stars including Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi will cast votes.
Devan and Swetha Menon are contesting for the top post of the organisation. Raveendran and Kukku Parameswaran are contesting for the general secretary post. Ansiba Hasan was elected unopposed for the post of joint secretary. Members will also be elected for other important posts today.
Mohanlal resigned from the president’s post of AMMA following the controversies after the release of the Hema Committee report. The governing body resigned on August 27. This led to the need for a new election. After the announcement of the candidates, allegations and counter-allegations were levelled. A case was also raised that Swetha Menon earned money by acting in obscene films. A group of women members also came forward against Kukku Parameswaran contesting for the secretary post.
