Rain to intensify in Kerala; change in warning, orange alert for three districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of rain in Kerala for the next five days. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts in various districts. There is an orange alert in Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod today. There is an orange alert in Kannur and Kasaragod tomorrow. There is a possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated places. The IMD defines very heavy rainfall as there will be 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. The IMD has declared a yellow alert in the following districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. The IMD defines heavy rain as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours.

Special instructions for public People living in areas where there is a possibility of landslides, mudslides and mountain floods should move to safer places as per the instructions of the authorities. Those living in riverbanks and downstream areas of dams should also take precautions and move as per the instructions of the authorities. People living in disaster-prone areas should ensure that camps are opened in their area and should move there during the day. For this, they can contact the local body and revenue authorities. Those living in unsecured houses and those living in houses with weak roofs should be especially careful as there is a possibility of strong winds. Those who foresee a dangerous situation should contact the authorities and move to safer places as a safety precaution. One should also be aware of the dangers that may arise due to trees falling and posts collapsing in the wind. It is not allowed to climb over bridges above water bodies to view the view, take selfies or stand in groups. Avoid unnecessary trips completely during heavy rains. Recreational trips to waterfalls, water bodies and hilly areas should be avoided completely until the rain warning is lifted. Exercise special caution when traveling on roads adjacent to water bodies. Also be careful on roads under repair work. The possibility of road accidents should be expected to increase in the event of heavy rains. Do not attempt to drive in areas where water bodies are overflowing. Trees/posts/boards, walls, etc. that are in a dangerous condition in private and public places should be secured and trees should be trimmed.
