Woman donates liver to husband, both die after transplant surgery, notice issued to hospital

PUNE: The health department has issued a notice to a private hospital after a woman, who donated a part of her liver to her husband died days after he died following a transplant surgery. The tragic incident happened in Maharashtra. Kamini Komkar donated a part of her liver to her husband identified as Bapu Komkar. The surgeries were conducted on August 15. However, Bapu Komkar's health deteriorated after the surgery and he died on August 17.

Kamini died on August 21 after developing an infection. The family alleged that medical negligence was the cause of death. Following this, the Maharashtra health department issued a notice to the Sahyadri Hospital in Pune.

'We have issued a notice to the hospital. We have directed them to submit all details of the transplant procedure on Monday morning,' said Dr Nagnath Yempalle, deputy director of the health department. The hospital authorities have also responded to the incident.

‘We have received the notice. We are fully cooperating in the investigation. All the requested information in this regard will be provided. The family and the donor were counselled beforehand about the risks of the surgery,’ the hospital authorities said. The surgery was performed as per medical protocols, but the recipient developed cardiogenic shock after the transplant,’ the hospital authorities said.

On Kamini’s health, the hospital said she initially recovered well, but later developed septic shock and multi-organ dysfunction, which could not be controlled even with advanced treatment.
