BUENOS AIRES: The Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires stood up in unison to give a fitting farewell to football virtuoso Lionel Messi, who appeared in an Argentina jersey, possibly in his last game for his country on home soil. It was pretty much easy for Lionel and his mates as Argentina cruised into the World Cup following a 3-0 win over Venezuela in the qualifying round.

“I have experienced many things in this field. A lot of years have gone by. It is a joy to always play for Argentina. I dreamed of finishing my game in the same style, and it happened today,” said Messi after the match.

Argentina is in a comfortable stage in the CONMEBOL standings with 35 points in 16 games. The team have already qualified for the World Cup to be held next year in the United States of America. Meanwhile, Messi has opened up about his desire to play in the WC next year, but will have to monitor his wavering physique before reaching a decision.

Messi, Argentina’s all-time top goal scorer, represented the team in five World Cups. The long trophy drought in his international career ended in 2022 as the little magician lifted the World Cup after a thrilling finale with France in Qatar.

“If I feel good, I love to be part of the game. If I’m not in the best shape, I prefer not to be involved. I have already made up my mind about the World Cup next year.” said Messi.
