'Deepest, darkest China': Trump's cryptic post wishing India and Russia 'a long and prosperous future together'
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump mocked India and Russia, which have distanced themselves from the United States on the issue of tariffs. Trump's mockery was in a social media post. "Looks like we've lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!" Trump posted on his Truth Social. The note was accompanied by a picture of Modi, Xi Jinping, and Putin together.
Trump's snarky remark came after a new alliance was formed between India, China, and Russia. Narendra Modi, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Trump's imposition of huge tariffs on countries, including India, has led to a situation where many countries have distanced themselves from the United States. This also led to India, China, and Russia coming closer.
There were also assessments that the coming together of the world's three most powerful countries is paving the way for a new world order. At the same time, there was criticism even from the United States against Trump's action of imposing excessive tariffs on India. Economic experts had warned that the US's weaponization of tariffs against other countries could be ineffective against a large economy like India, while simultaneously harming the broader global trade system and acting as a setback to US economic goals.
Trump had also been warned that pushing India would pave the way for the strengthening of the BRICS grouping. India had earlier responded to the issue by saying that, as a country, it is India's sovereign right to decide which countries it wants to trade with. Trump's standoff with India came after India rejected his demand to end oil imports from Russia.
