Rs 99 Onam offer ends in tragedy; Three in critical condition as crowd goes berserk in Kozhikode shop

KOZHIKODE: Ten people suffered injuries after the crowd went berserk, rushing inside a shop in Kozhikode following an Onam discount sale. Three of the injured are in critical condition. The incident took place at a shop called ‘Black’ near Kasthurikulam in Nadapuram around 12 noon today.

The shop announced its offer this morning, promising to sell any chosen outfit at Rs 99. Upon learning about this, a large crowd, including people from nearby places, reached the area. Within a short time, the shop was surrounded by a sea of people. At one stage, the crowd became uncontrollable and they stormed inside the shop, breaking the glass barrier. Many fell on the floor, enduring the pain of getting pierced by the broken glass pieces. Those who were in critical condition were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College and a nearby private hospital. The police later reached the spot and took the situation under control.

The police closed the shop following the incident. The officials blamed the shop owners for not providing enough security despite predicting such a rush. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
