452 votes: CP Radhakrishnan elected 15th Vice-President of India
NEW DELHI: NDA candidate C P Radhakrishnan has won the election as the 15th Vice President of the country. NDA candidate Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes. A total of 767 votes were polled. Opposition candidate Justice Sudershan Reddy got 300 votes. When the results were announced, it was understood that C P Radhakrishnan received votes from the opposition ranks.
The voting was held in Room F101 (Vasudha) of the Parliament House from 10 am to 5 pm. The counting of votes began at 6 pm. The voting was necessitated after Jagdeep Dharkar resigned with two years remaining in the post of Vice President. Jagdeep Dharkar became the Vice President in 2022 by securing 528 votes. The Vice President is elected by secret ballot by the Electoral College, which consists of members of both the Houses of Parliament. The Electoral College currently has 781 MPs (Lok Sabha 542, Rajya Sabha 239). 391 votes were required for a majority.
