Mass resignations in Manipur BJP as PM to visit on Saturday, rebel organisations to boycott functions
NEW DELHI: 43 people have left the BJP from the Phungyar Assembly constituency in Manipur's Ukhrul district. The resignations include the constituency president, heads of Mahila, Yuva and Kisan Morchas, and booth presidents. This is an area dominated by the Naga community. The incident comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Manipur on Saturday.
The resignation letter states that they are worried about the current situation within the party and that they do not trust the leaders at the grassroots level enough. It is indicated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach Manipur after the function in Mizoram on Saturday. He is expected to meet the people of the riot-affected areas in Churachandpur and Imphal and announce rehabilitation packages.
Six organizations have called for a boycott of Modi's events. The CorCom (Coordinating Committee) has called for a boycott until Modi leaves the state. Modi will attend events in Imphal and Churachandpur on Saturday. Heavy security has been deployed in the region ahead of the visit.
Meanwhile, it has been decided to open National Highway 2 in Manipur. An agreement has been reached between the government and the Kuki organizations on this. It has also been decided to end the blockades. This is ahead of Modi's visit to Manipur. This is the first visit by the Prime Minister since the outbreak of communal violence in Manipur in May 2023. Modi will first visit Mizoram and then reach Manipur.
