Indian 'Nari Shakti' in World Boxing Championship
LIVERPOOL: Indian women boxers ran riot inside the boxing ring as they won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the World Boxing Championships in England. Jasmine Lamboria won gold in the 57 kg category and Meenakshi Hooda won gold in the 48 kg category, while Nupur Sheoren won silver in the 80+ category. Pooja Rani won bronze in the 80 kg category. This is considered one of India's best performances at the World Championships.
Jasmine won the gold medal by defeating Olympic silver medalist Julia Seremeta of Poland in the final. Although Julia had the upper hand in the first round, Jasmine gained back momentum in the second round to take away the gold. This is India's first gold medal in this world championship. Minakshi won the gold by defeating Olympic bronze medalist Nassim Ksiba of Kazakhstan in the 48 kg category.
Nupur, who lost to Poland's Agata Kaczmarska in a neck-to-neck battle in the 80+ category final, settled for silver. Although shorter in size than her opponent, Agatha's punches at the end were crucial in her victory. Pooja Rani won the bronze medal after losing in the semifinals of the 80 kg category. Pooja lost to England's Emily Asquith in the semifinals. Indian athlete Meenakshi reached the finals in the 48 kg category. This is the first time that three Indian women have entered the finals in a World Championship. Meanwhile, for the first time in the World Championship in the last 10 years, India failed to win a single medal in the men's category.
