Rahul Mamkootathil for UDF, police atrocities for LDF; assembly session that begins today to turn into battleground
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The controversies that have ignited the society, including the Rahul Mamkootathil issue, will turn the assembly session that begins today into a battleground. The ruling and opposition parties will fight head-on. The clashes that have been taking place outside so far will further complicate the assembly session. The assembly session will also be a rehearsal for the upcoming local body election, as the BJP, despite not having representation in the assembly, is preparing to open a fight on the streets against the government's flaws.
The opposition will attack the ruling party by raising issues such as the police custodial assaults that implicate the Home Department, the Chief Minister's continued silence on the matter, and the DYFI leader's phone conversation against party leaders in Thrissur. The ruling party will try to put the Congress on the defensive by raising issues such as the sexual allegations against Rahul Mamkootathil, the suicide of Congress leader Jose Nelledam in Wayanad, and the suicide attempt of Padmaja, the daughter-in-law of DCC Treasurer N.M. Vijayan, who committed suicide last December.
The visuals of police brutality seen across Kerala through social media and the repeated police atrocities will make the ruling party sweat a lot. The criticism leveled against the Home Department and the Chief Minister at the CPI state conference and the declaration of CPI state secretary Binoy Vishwam that lock-up violence is not a Left policy are reasons for the opposition to take a dig. The Chief Minister will have to break his silence in the Assembly in the face of the allegations.
Will Rahul come?
Another issue that is raising curiosity is whether Rahul Mamkootathil, who was suspended from the party after being caught up in sexual allegations, will come to the Assembly. Opposition leader VD Satheesan is trying to prevent Rahul from coming, as it will reduce the moral strength of the opposition's tactics. However, the old A faction, including PC Vishnunath, is determined to bring Rahul to the House. If the ruling party raises the issue of Rahul, the opposition will defend it by taking up issues, including that of M Mukesh.
