Attacks jewelry employees after spraying chilli powder, robs gold worth Rs 10 crore

CHENNAI: A group travelling with gold to be given to a jewelry shop was attacked and robbed of their gold. The incident happened Saturday night on the Tiruchirappalli-Chennai National Highway. About 10 kg of gold jewelry nearly 1250 sovereigns were lost. It is reported that the gold lost is worth 10 crores.

According to the information provided by the police, three including Gunawat (26), the manager went to Dindigul in a car with gold ornaments from a jewelry shop in Chennai. After giving some gold to a shop in Dindigul, they were returning to Chennai. In between the journey, they stopped briefly when reached Samayapuram. Meanwhile, a group of four people in another car who had followed them threw chilli powder at them, attacked and then fled with the gold worth crores.

The thieves threw chilli powder into the faces of Gunawat and two others. By the time they regained vision, the thieves had decamped with the gold. On being informed, the Samayapuram police reached the spot and registered a case. Four teams were formed under the leadership of Trichy Superintendent of Police, to catch the accused. The investigation has begun. The police are investigating whether the gang had been following them from Chennai or had come after Dindigul.
